Cherry Hill Starts Smoke-Free Campaign

Wednesday, November 21st, 2019

Mayor Chuck Cahn and several anti-smoking representatives from the region gathered in DeCou Park on Thursday, Nov. 15 to announce a campaign that will prohibit smoking tobacco on township-owned property. The law, which will have a public hearing and potential adoption at Monday, Nov. 26’s 7:30 p.m. council meeting, will make the township’s 52 parks, trails, recreational facilities, town hall, the Cherry Hill Public Library, the Department of Public Works, Croft Farm and Barclay Farmstead smoke-free areas. “It’s called ‘Smoke-Free Cherry Hill,’” Cahn declared, and the campaign officially launched following the Nov. 8 council meeting’s ordinance approval on first reading.

The significant change, said Cahn, is in regards to the enforcement power. Previously, the township had a resolution in place to prohibit smoking on township property, but there are no penalties for violators. “Why are we doing this? Cherry Hill residents deserve to breathe clean air,” Cahn declared. There are serious diseases related to smoking tobacco products, he said, including cancer, heart disease, asthma and a host of other respiratory issues. Kids who are exposed to secondhand tobacco smoke face an serious risk to several diseases, he declared. “This is about protecting our children,” explained Cahn. “It’s about smoke-free areas.” “It encourages healthy environments,” he added.

The legislation will give inhabitants the right to enjoy the facilities and help to minimize cigarette butt litter that pollutes land and water and is bad when ingested by kids, pets and wildlife alike. In addition, said Cahn, the legislation will reduce maintenance prices, make smoke-free areas the norm, establish healthy smoking habits early and set an example for other organizations. Through Cahn’s Mayor’s Wellness Campaign, he has encouraged healthy living habits for the past year. Keeping cigarettes smoke out of open space will aid in that effort, he added.

According to Kim Burns of Tobacco Free for a Healthy New Jersey and the Department of Health, the ordinance is one of the most comprehensive in the South Jersey region. “This regulation is designed to protect the health of the inhabitants of Cherry Hill,” said Burns. “This is not just an issue of secondhand smoke.” This is the de-normalization of smoking and the impact on future generations, she continued. “We want our kids to grow up in a world where smoking tobacco is not the norm,” she explained. The American Cancer Society’s representative, Jackie Craig, spoke of the Great American Smoke-Out, now in it’s 37th year, which coincided with the campaign announcement. Every third Thursday of November, the day is in the spotlight as a time to quit smoking. According to Craig, research shows that smokers are most successful when using tobacco smoking cessation hotlines, groups, nicotine replacement methods, prescriptions or support and encouragement from family and friends.

Cigarettes Sales in Supermarket, Scottish Shops

Monday, November 19th, 2019

cheap chesterfield cigsLeven hit the national limelight this week as one of its major stores joined a crusade to improve health in Scotland. The local Sainsbury’s superstore was one of six across the country which stopped selling tobacco products on Monday. The stubbing out of cigarette sales marked the extension of a scheme launched at other premises earlier in 2019, in response to a Scottish Government levy. New supplementary charges will apply on business rates paid by large stores selling cigs and alcohol. Under the new Public Health Levy, retailers are to be taxed on any store with a rate-able value of more than £300,000 which sells drink and smoking products.

Sainsbury’s head office explained: “The impact of the Levy, introduced by the Scottish Government, has led us to undertake a review of the sale of tobacco products in our Scottish shops.

“Earlier this year, we removed tobacco products from sale from three of our Scottish supermarkets and one convenience shop.”

The trial has now been expanded to a further half-dozen outlets, including Leven, added the statement.

A Scottish Government spokesman said the public health supplement was introduced in recognition of Scotland’s well-documented health and social problems associated with alcohol and tobacco smoking.

The Government was already taking action to reduce alcohol and tobacco harmful effects through regulation to introduce minimum pricing for alcohol and prohibiting tobacco displays.

“The public health supplement will contribute towards the preventative spend ordinances being taken forward jointly with the Scottish government, local authorities, the NHS and the third sector,”  explained the spokesman.

The announcement drew over 100 comments on the Mail’s Facebook page, with some calling it a good move in terms of health, and that all other stores  and superstores in Fife should follow suit.

Contibutors said there were many other places where people could purchase cigarettes, while some readers felt smokers were being unfairly penalized once again. People’s intolerance of their smoking habit was out of proportion to alcohol or drug users, they added.

Smoke-Free Students Lifestyle, Bakersfield College

Friday, November 16th, 2019

Bakersfield College’s Mentoring and Peer Services, and the Student Health and Wellness Center will host the 37th annual Great American Smokeout on Nov. 15, argued Richard Heath, the Student Government Association treasurer and lead MAPS mentor. This is Heath’s second year participating in the Smokeout. “When we did it last year it was pretty very successful,” he said. “We brought out the tombstone and the coffin, and we had people donating cigarettes.” This year donating your cigarettes may win you a NOOK tablet reader.

You can get raffle tickets to win the NOOK by donating your cigarettes, or watching some of the cig educational screenings during the Smokeout. B-COUGH is also part of the Smokeout according to Nick Acosta, SGA general counsel and B-COUGH’s student chair. B-COUGH is coordinating with MAPS to help organize the event. “We want to see just how we’re going to reach people and encourage them to stop smoking tobacco,” Acosta argued.

“I think it’s going to be a great event. There will also be students filling out pledges to quit smoking. “We’re going to encourage people to stop smoking in a bunch of different ways as possible, and hopefully we’ll bring awareness to the smoking issue and help them stop smoking.” Tobacco Free Coalition of Kern County will have events in the Levan Center from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. discussing various topics including cigarette-butt littering, second-hand smoke and other smoking control issues affecting Kern County residents. Heath said Kern County Mental Health and the Student Health and Wellness Center will conduct depression screenings in the three tents that will be on the grassy area in front of the library. He is encouraging students to take advantage of it.

Tawntannisha Thompson, BC’s liaison to the dean of students and coordinator for MAPS and BC Be Fit, said that November is fight depression month. She said that last month the students were given suicide literature and some had an initial screening, and that this is just a follow up to that. “Everything’s going to be under the tent,” Thompson said. “There will be popcorn and cotton candy.” BC Be Fit will be in one of the tents having a Zumba dance session to get people’s hearts pumping. Thompson wouldn’t let on about the surprises and other things happening in the tents. “They have to show up to find out what’s going on under the tent,” said Thompson. The coffin, the raffle, the screenings, “It’s all taking place under the tent.” Heath said that every time MAPS set up the tables on the campus they see between 200 to 300 students. Usually two or three students take his advice.

Tobacco Growers Profit Dropped, Low Tobacco Prices

Wednesday, November 14th, 2019

cheap al fakher tobaccoTobacco growers in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), declared that low demand and a dropping sales price for Virginia-variety Al Fakher tobacco are threatening their livelihoods. The farmers, who are expecting big losses for this year’s harvest, are asking the provincial administration to intervene in the tobacco market. This year’s harvest has brought little but trouble to Lombok’s independent tobacco farmers. The sale price of Virginia tobacco recently ranges between Rp 3,000 (US 31 cents) and Rp 5,000 per kilogram, decreased dramatically from between Rp 30,000 (US$3.30) and Rp 35,000 a kilogram in 2018.

“Last year, we could sell of tobacco for Rp 3 million per kilogram, but the price has decreased to Rp 3,500 per kilogram,” Lalu Musdar, a farmer from Janapria, Central Lombok, argued. “The tobacco companies are manipulating the costs as they wish. We wish the governor to urge them to purchase tobacco from us at a fair price.”

Musdar, who had planted Virginia tobacco on more than 1.3 hectares of his farm in Janapria, explained he would suffer big losses of up to Rp 70 million if he fails to sell his harvest.

Operational costs for growing tobacco this year have increased as sale prices have dropped. Musdar declared that he rented 1.3 hectares for to cultivate the tobacco for Rp 8 million, while his other costs have also raised.

The price of fertilizer, for example, has increased from Rp 200,000 to Rp 300,000 per quintal. Musdar reported that he paid for 8 quintals to raise his tobacco crop.

Labor wages have also risen sharply, from Rp 15,000 last year to Rp 35,000 this year.

“If the price of tobacco is Rp 30,000 per kilogram, we might gain a less profit, but the price has dropped. For our production expenses, we borrowed from the cooperative and loan sharks at a high interest rate,” Musdar added.

Tobacco growing is centered on three regencies on Lombok Island: Central, East and West Lombok. More than 16,373 hectares were dedicated to tobacco cultivation for 2019.

The farmers set a production target of 32,464 tons, which they had planned to sell to 21 partner tobacco companies.

However, five firms backed out of purchasing from the farmers, while several others reduced the size of their procurement citing a declined in cigarette production. Another tobacco farmer, Fatahillah, urged the provincial administration to avoid the operational licenses of companies that failed to increase their prices for tobacco crop.

Tobacco Market Innovation, Reynolds American Smoke-Free Products

Tuesday, November 13th, 2019

discount beratt cigaretteReynolds American Inc. reported that its main focus on innovation and the development of new tobacco products will help the company stay involving in the face of decreasing smoking rates. Reynolds American President and CEO Daan Delen explained that during Investors Day presentations Monday morning that the company is focusing over the long-term on arising smoke-free products such as snus and its new e-cigarette Vuse that offer larger margins and greater potential for growth.

“Everything we’re working on from an innovation standpoint has a higher margin than cigs,” Delen argued. “I think we’re very well positioned in an evolving tobacco market.”

Authorities with the Winston-Salem-based tobacco company (NYSE: RAI) said volumes have risen this year in smoke-free categories such as moist snuff and snus, particularly among younger demographics, while cigarette amounts continue to drop.

But Delen emphasized that cigarettes are still the essential focus and business for the tobacco industry. He offered an internal mantra of “80/90/90,” which reflects that 80 per cent of the company’s resources are still in the combustible tobacco space, 90 per cent of its organizational resources focus on that area, and 90 per cent of its investigation and development budget is centered on combustibles.

“That is the main category that is still going to deliver a lot of growth in the future,” Delen declared, noting that the U.S. cigarette market continues to offer approximately a $14 billion “profit pool,” about 85 per cent of which comes from cigs.

But Reynolds American’s strategy on “transforming tobacco” is  evident, as Delen spent substantial time talking about other categories besides cigarettes in advertising the company’s efforts toward new innovation.

Tobacco Displays and Cigarettes Sales in Supermarket, Sainsbury Business

Monday, November 12th, 2019

The move will widen a trial launched in May at three supermarkets and one convenience shop and was made after a new health tax enforced by the Scottish Government in April. The company will stop the sale of cigs in stores in Drumchapel, Garthdee, Hamilton, Saltcoats, Livingston and Leven from this morning. A study by the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR), commissioned by Asda, required new profits from Scottish supermarkets could be decreased by 10 per cent following the introduction of the levy. Yesterday, Tesco and Morrisons declared that they had no plans to follow Sainsbury’s. The new tobacco business rates apply to large retailers that sell smoking products and alcohol and go towards implementing the costs of problems associated with these two types of tobacco product.

A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s reported: “The influence of the levy introduced by the Scottish Government has led us to undertake a review of the sale of tobacco products in our Scottish shops.” A Scottish Government spokesperson explained: “The public health supplement was introduced in recognition of Scotland’s well-documented health and social problems associated with alcohol and tobacco smoking. “This Government is already taking new action for to reduce alcohol and tobacco use related bad effects through legislation to introduce minimum pricing for alcohol and prohibiting tobacco products displays.” Meanwhile, the legal challenge by Imperial Tobacco to legislation to ban no staffed tobacco vending machines and open cigarettes displays in stores will begin today at the Court of Session.

In spite of the new smoking ban having been overwhelmingly passed in the Scottish Parliament and twice upheld by Scottish courts, Imperial Tobacco brought its legal challenge on the basis that the Scottish Parliament does not have the right to legalize on the sale of goods in Scotland. Legislation on retail tobacco displays for large retailers was introduced in England in April earlier this year. Legislation for Northern Ireland came in to force at the end of last month and is due to come into force in Wales on December 3.

Cigarette Packs New Legislation Soon, the UAE Ministry of Health

Friday, November 9th, 2019

cheap ok cigsThe UAE Ministry of Health is likely to introduce new anti-tobacco ordinances with a view to discourage inhabitants from smoking tobacco products. The third clause of the federal Tobacco Control Law No.25 of 2009 relates to the statutory warnings on OK cigarette packets. The new laws are likely to make it compulsory to cover half of the surface place of the cigarette packages with health risk smoking warnings including pictures of a snake, a pregnant woman and a diseased hand holding a burning cig.

Cigarettes companies are likely to be given a three-month deadline to exhaust their old stock of cigs and introduce packages with the new health smoking warnings and images.

These regulations are likely to be adopted by other GCC states which will not allow import of smoking products without the new health warning images after three months.

According to Abu Dhabi health statistics for 2018, 24 per cent UAE national men and 29 percent of expatriate men smoked. In the case of women, only 0.08 percent of nationals smoked tobacco against 6.6 percent for emigrants.
