Farmers increase global action against tobacco ban

December 1st, 2017 by Isabela Mayer

In a recent development the tobacco farmers from all over the globe raised their voice and put allegations on the World Health Organization (WHO) of displaying total indifference towards several million farmers along with their families livelihoods ins several poverty stricken parts of the world. They held a meeting in Lexington and Kentucky.

This year at the International Tobacco Growers Association (ITGA) Annual General Meeting almost 80 percent of the world’s traded tobacco was represented. During the discussion farmers talked about the diminishing effect that could be brought upon them if the new guidelines for the framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) were executed in Uruguay this month.

These new rules would end up putting a ban on the use of ingredients in tobacco products and also decrease the tobacco planted all over the world.

As per the ITGA these guidelines could prove to have a destroying role in the social and economic consequences without any significant change in people’s health.

The future course of these guidelines will now be decided during the Fourth Conference of the Parties meeting in Uruguay this year in November.
