Not Ready for Total Ban on Smokeless Tobacco

In a country where, on an average, three out of 10 people use smokeless tobacco such as gutkha, paan masala, khaini etc, a mere 18 cessation centres offering help to quit the habit is not enough. A Supreme Court order banning smokeless tobacco products is expected on April 13.

The End of Tobacco Stalemate

The nine-day long protest by the tobacco farmers came to an end on Tuesday when board chairman Kamalavardhana Rao assured them of better prices if they start taking part in the auctions. The farmers, who have been resisting to participate in the sale transactions till they get Rs 140 per kg, finally relented and agreed for the offer of Rs 124 per kg.

Smoking Ban in Govt. Buildings

Provincial Governor Eugene Balitang has issued a memorandum recently banning smoking Bond and other famous brands in all areas of government premises most especially at the capitol building. In his memorandum, Balitang enjoined all department heads to strictly implement the no smoking in government premises in compliance to Memorandum Circular No. 17, Series of 2009 of the Civil Service Commission (CSC).

Surrogate Tobacco Ads Banned

camel onlineThe Union Health Ministry has decided to clamp down on surrogate advertisements of tobacco products and Camel and other brands. The ministry claims the advertisement of paan masala promotes other harmful tobacco products as well. It will now approach the Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry to stop these advertisements.
