In the 1945, three cigarette brands: Lucky Strike cigarettes, Camel cigarettes, and Chesterfield cigarettes showed up and established a company hold on the cigarette market. But, in the 1950s Marlboro cigarettes impressively came back. Marlboro cigarettes posted a new Marlboro man image in promotion and the sales soar up by 5000%.

Philip Morris began a legacy of bold moves to meet market challenges by taking a virtually unknown woman’s cigarette and reintroducing it with a new masculine face and filter in the midst of the first lung cancer reports.

The brand is named after Great Marlborough Street, the location of its original London factory.

At the Griya Balur clinic in Indonesia, family members are encouraged to smoke “divine cigarettes” for health benefits while patients undergo treatment for other illnesses. The treatment includes the blowing of smoke from “divine cigarettes” infused with “nanotechnology” to remove their cancer causing “free radicals”. Along with cancer and autism, it is just one of the ailments the Griya Balur clinic claims it can cure with Marlboro cigarettes.

“Smoking can eliminate anxiety, sharpen concentration and calm the nerves. It is a good cheap alternative to other expensive drugs, like Valium,” Aris Widodo, a pharmacology professor at Brawijaya University in Indonesia, told an AFP reporter.

Smuggling Cigarettes at Dublin Airport

Cigarettes and alcohol have been seized by officers from Revenue’s Custom Service at Dublin Airport. Around 370,000 cigarettes – including Marlboro, Silk Cut, Respect and L and M brands – and a quantity of roll-your-own tobacco were found between March 25 and April 3.

The seizures have an estimated retail value of €160,000 with a potential loss to the Exchequer of more than €125,000.

A quantity of wine, spirits and several vehicles have also been seized.

Philip Morris Sale Marlboro Brands in Japan

The earthquake and tsunami in Japan are not expected to affect Philip Morris International Inc.’s sales and profit in the country, the cigarette maker said Monday. Philip Morris International, which sells Marlboro and other brands overseas, said during a presentation at the Consumer Analyst Group of Europe Conference in London that all of the cigarettes for sale in Japan are produced outside the country and shipments at ports are “being unloaded normally.”

The company said four of 28 third-party distribution centers in Japan are closed because of damage. Two are expected to open this week, and other distribution arrangements are being made for the other two centers.

The company, headquartered in New York and Lausanne, Switzerland, said it reopened its Tokyo office March 24 after a temporary closing. All of its employees are accounted for and safe.marlboro
